Ursula K. Le Guin - The message of a story / Przesłanie historii

I listened to „Ursula K. Le Guin reads from „The Wizard of Earthsea”” (1) after I painted her portrait (2) I was intending to paint for two years now maybe. I liked what she said about the message of the story and what we've been taught in schools is the message. So I wrote her words.

„What I want to put into question is the idea that is so widespread that a story must have a message. That a story is a vehicle for a sermon as it were. And if not, that it's only trivial entertainment. I'm afraid that some of this is quite unwittingly taught in schools a great deal where children are thought „what is the message of the story you just read”? A story can mean a lot without having any identifiable message at all. I'm inclined to think that the less explicit it's meanings are, the more powerful they may be. Think of Shakespeare. What does the Tempest mean? What's the message? It's got thousand of messages for thousand different people. It's inexhaustible. So what I think I'm talking about is intellectualizing fiction and art and thinking that all there is to begot out of it really is this sort of meaning that can be put into words and of course coded on an exam paper that's partly where the trouble starts... ah, test passing... you know.
Where the story happens is as you write it, as you tell it or hear it or as you read it. Or a story happens is in your head, sure enough, but it's also in your body and in your heart, in your feelings. If it doesn't happen there, it doesn't happen very importantly. And I think the real message every story, every piece of imaginative fiction tells and also even memoir is that we can be other people, we can live other lives, we can live them as we read. No other art empowers us in quite that way. Not even drama, not even the movies because we watch those, they are there and we look at them but reading... A Book is nothing, it's black marks on paper. We make the book as we read it and therefore when you become a character of a book you become them, you become them in a deeper way than I think any other way. When you take on another life in fiction it's yours more intimately than the other forms and that's what's so particularly cool about reading. That's my message.”

Wysłuchałem „Ursula K. Le Guin czyta z „Czarnoksiężnika z Ziemiomorza”” (1) po namalowaniu jej portretu (2) który chciałem namalować może już od dwóch lat. Spodobało mi się to co powiedziała o przesłaniu historii, o tym czego uczono nas w szkołach, że jest tym przesłaniem. Zapisałem więc jej słowa.
Poniżej moje tłumaczenie bazujące na tłumaczeniu translatora.
„Chcę zakwestionować ideę, która jest tak rozpowszechniona, że historia musi mieć przesłanie. Że opowieść jest jak gdyby nośnikiem kazania. A jeśli nie, to tylko banalna rozrywka. Obawiam się, że część z tego jest dość nieświadomie nauczana w szkołach, gdzie uczy się dzieci o tym „jakie jest przesłanie przeczytanej właśnie historii”? Historia może wiele znaczyć bez żadnego możliwego do zidentyfikowania przesłania. Jestem skłonna sądzić, że im mniej oczywiste są jej znaczenia, tym silniejsze mogą być. Pomyśl o Szekspirze. Co oznacza „Burza”? Jakie jest przesłanie? Zawiera tysiące wiadomości dla tysiąca różnych osób. Niewyczerpane ich źródło. Myślę więc, że to o czym mówię to intelektualizacja fikcji i sztuki i myślenie że wszystko, co może się z niej zrodzić, to naprawdę ten rodzaj znaczenia, który można ująć w słowa i oczywiście zakodować na egzaminie (co częściowo stanowi początek problemu)... ech, zdawanie testów... rozumiecie.
Historia dzieje się w miarę, jak ją piszesz, opowiadasz, słyszysz lub czytasz. Albo historia dzieje się w twojej głowie, oczywiście, ale jest też w twoim ciele, w twoim sercu, w twoich uczuciach. Jeśli tak się nie dzieje, hisoria nie dzieje się w sposób na prawdę ważny. I myślę, że prawdziwym przesłaniem, które przekazuje każda historia, każdy kawałek wymyślonej fikcji, a nawet pamiętnik, jest to, że możemy być innymi ludźmi, możemy żyć innym życiem, możemy żyć nimi, gdy czytamy. Żadna inna sztuka nie daje nam takiej siły. Nawet dramat, nawet fily, bo je oglądamy. One tam są a my tu i patrzymy na nie. Ale gdy czytamy... Książka to nic, to czarne ślady na papierze. Tworzymy książkę w miarę, gdy ją czytamy. A zatem kiedy stajesz się postacią z książki, na prawdę jesteś nią, stajesz się nią w głębszy sposób, niż myślę przez jakiekolwiek inne medium. Kiedy podejmujesz inne życie w fikcji, jest twoje w sposób bardziej intymny niż dzięki innym formom i to jest szczególnie fajne w czytaniu. To jest moja wiadomość”.
