I use a bit simpler categorisation:

1. Not addicted

2. Addicted but fighting it and winning

3. Addicted but fighting it and losing

4. Addicted and not fighting


While being a functional addict (addict that can still function in society) is an interesting category, the most important part for me is if you are or are not addicted and why (finding the „why” causes you to win the fight, while not finding causes to lose). I’m turning from 3 to 2 whenever I’m properly oriented towards higher goals. If I turn away from them, I go to 3 instantly. If I forget them, I go to 4.
